    Despite mentioning the pockets of methane/sewer smell on three occasions the hotel administration denied any knowledge of it , despite smelling it in our room on the third floor!

    Having read the consistently gushing reviews about the Ikos chain, perhaps our expectations were a little too high. It was a secondary holiday this summer with only a 5-night stay, however, and with good weather and a more than decent hotel, we were able to mostly enjoy a break in the sunshine. On arrival, Bianca made us feel very welcome, and explained how things worked. Our room was not ready until 3 pm, but we were able to enjoy a lovely late lunch In Flavors buffet restaurant, which catered wonderfully for vegetarians like ourselves. We used the time afterwards to explore the hotel grounds, and were a little alarmed by the huge number of families with young children. There were “Adults-Only” pool areas, but age 12 is hardly an adult… Luckily, the teenagers had started back at school, or the ambiance of the pool and grass area by the beach could have been ruined. At 3 pm we were escorted to our room. We had only booked the basic level, rather than the Deluxe, and I must admit that on entering the room, we were far from wowed. It was clean (apart from stains on the sofa bed) and functional, with a very nice bathroom. But absolutely nothing whatsoever to suggest “Superior”, which is what it was supposed to be. The pillows were ridiculously squashy (the first thing my hubby checked), and so we asked for firmer ones to replace them. The lady wrote it down, but they never arrived all holiday. The “Pool/Garden View” comprised of a small patch of grass below our balcony (someone’s garden), at the side of a back track for service vehicles – or so it seemed. Sandwiched between buildings, this was perhaps the worst view that we have ever had in a hotel; it was depressing. There wasn’t even a welcome gift or card in the room, which was a first for many years of holidays in this calibre of hotel. We are early risers, and enjoy an early morning swim before breakfast when on holiday. All the pools were closed off until 9 am, which I understand is by law for safety. But we don’t all like to spend the best hours of the day in bed, and sadly, the sea was completely unusable for swimming in because of the dangerous large rocks underfoot (beach shoes weren’t enough for these ankle-breakers). We didn’t see anyone swimming in the sea all holiday. This was the thing that mainly spoilt the holiday for us. We couldn’t even sit out and read by the pool during the early morning (though there were beds on the beach), and by 9 am, small crowds had gathered by the pool gates to run and claim their spots. We also noted that a number of early claimed beds were left literally for hours, day after day, by the same guests… No enforcement in place, whatsoever. The general lack of seating outside, also meant that the only places to sit and enjoy the evening hours were in the bar areas (or back out on the beach). Another big disappointment for us. The promenade along the beach front didn’t offer anything to do, except to dodge cyclists and look at the same hotels and private apartments. Bianca had explained that Ikos hotels tended to be built in the more secluded areas, and this area was pretty dire, as holidays go. We had booked 3 restaurants for dinner, as encouraged by the hotel and reviewers. It seemed very regimented and odd to have to do this before even arriving at the resort, though we towed the line. After the first dinner, we decided that since the menus were the same all day and night, we actually preferred to cancel the evening bookings and just turn up for lunch when we felt like it. That worked much better for us in holiday mode, and there was always plenty of space. Food-wise, we would rate Fresco 4/5, Olive 4/5, Ouzo 3/5, and Beach Club 2/5. The buffet we would rate 4/5 for a good selection of vegetarian options, but not much variation. Food quality was generally good, and service was excellent throughout. But we were a little confused about pricing in the restaurants, which meant very little when the whole place is All-Inclusive! There was sometimes a queue for Flavors, with over 50% of guests with often whinging toddlers. There was a “Quiet Area” to sit in, but the screams and shouting could be heard throughout. On one occasion, guests had even brought a large inflatable in the restaurant with their entourage, which belied belief! The food was good, but Flavors felt like being in an upmarket creche at peak times. Waiting to be seated seemed like a pointless and time-wasting exercise, which just held the queue up further. We soon found the quietest place to eat, even though we were a bit out on a limb. Our conclusion, is that Ikos is for a certain type of clientele. And if all of the hotels follow this regimented structure (with a number of staff who seemed scared to put a foot out of place), this isn’t for us. In the short time we were there, I found out later that I had email asking for a mid-holiday review (why not ask in person; we might have got the pillows…), a phone call asking for feedback (presumably because the email hadn’t been read). And on checkout, a deputy manager demanding even more feedback. This was quite intimidating, and though I spoke openly, he still insisted (several times), that comprehensive feedback was put in writing to the manager (he gave me a card) AND a full survey should be completed – with compliments for named staff, for their professional growth. It took me back to the days of being a Mystery Shopper. Beam me up, we were just glad to get home!!!
