A thoroughly disappointing family holiday – poor standards, unsafe conditions and a complete lack of management We have just returned from a 10-night family holiday at Paradise Island Hotel in Lanzarote, and I can honestly say it was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences we have ever had. We booked this holiday to spend some much-needed quality time together as a family. Unfortunately, what should have been a relaxing and enjoyable break was overshadowed by poor standards, serious safety concerns and what appeared to be a complete lack of effective hotel management. The behaviour of other guests was one of the biggest problems. Excessive alcohol consumption resulted in drunken, disruptive and antisocial behaviour, which seemed to go completely unchecked by hotel staff and management. Guests were effectively left to their own devices, behaving however they pleased with little consideration for the families and young children around them. There appeared to be no meaningful attempt to manage this behaviour or maintain a pleasant, family-friendly environment. It created an uncomfortable atmosphere and significantly affected our enjoyment of the holiday. We certainly don't begrudge anyone having a good time, but there is a difference between enjoying yourself and behaving in a way that ruins the experience for everyone else. Safety was another serious concern. The lighting around the hotel grounds was inadequate, making certain areas difficult to navigate after dark. Most concerningly, my youngest child suffered a very bad fall as a result of the poor lighting. This was incredibly upsetting and something that should never have happened on a family holiday. Adequate lighting in communal areas is a basic safety requirement, particularly at a resort catering for families with young children. Cleanliness and general maintenance were equally disappointing. We encountered cockroaches, which only added to our concerns about the overall hygiene and upkeep of the hotel. Litter was frequently visible around the grounds, and many areas appeared neglected and poorly maintained. The all-inclusive experience also left a lot to be desired. The drinks selection was extremely limited, facilities were disappointing, and the overall offering fell well short of reasonable expectations. Staffing levels appeared inadequate, customer service was poor, and there was a noticeable lack of management presence throughout our stay. The hotel seemed content to allow things to happen rather than actively manage the environment and ensure guests were having a safe and enjoyable experience. I want to make one thing absolutely clear: we booked a three-star hotel and were not expecting five-star luxury. However, there is a considerable difference between a basic three-star offering and a hotel failing to deliver acceptable standards of cleanliness, safety, maintenance and guest management. What frustrates me most is that family holidays are not cheap. We work hard, save our money and look forward to these opportunities to make memories with our children. Instead, we spent far too much of our holiday dealing with an environment that was unpleasant, poorly managed and, at times, unsafe. We still managed to make some lovely memories together as a family, but that was entirely despite the hotel, not because of it. Paradise Island needs to take a serious look at its management, safety standards, cleanliness and approach to antisocial behaviour. Families should be able to enjoy their holidays without worrying about drunken guests, cockroaches or their children being injured because of poorly maintained surroundings. Based on our experience, I would strongly advise other families to think very carefully before booking this hotel. We certainly won't be returning, and I cannot recommend it.
